Worship is central to the life of First Congregational.  In worship we gather to hear God's word proclaimed, to sing the praises of God and to recommit ourselves through the offerings of our life and our labor to the work of God's realm on earth.

About our History...

First Congregational is a congregation rich in history and poised for the future. Founded in 1864, First Congregational began its 141st year of ministry this year. Congregationalists find their beginnings with the original Pilgrims and Puritans of New England in the 1600s. Once the Puritans settled in the New World, they became known as Congregationalists. In 1962, our congregation affiliated with the United Church of Christ, a group of churches, about 1.3 million members, who value individual relationship with God, Jesus and the Bible and who come together as a people with diverse opinions and beliefs, but whose hope is found in the person and work of Jesus Christ, God's son.

About our Beliefs...

  • Progressive Theology, Traditional Worship best describes our beliefs. We look to the Bible as a starting place for belief. We look to Jesus Christ as our guide for faith and service.

  • Our worship is traditionally based. We begin worship with a prelude by a wonderful 15 rank Moeller pipe organ. We are led into worship with a full procession, crucifer, acolytes, choir, liturgist and clergy. We value the rich expression of the worship elements of the church catholic and value the proclamation of the Word of God in preaching, from our Congregational heritage.

  • For those who have come from a traditional church environment or for those seeking a Christian community with traditional worship and progressive theological leanings, First Congregational may be the right fit for you.

  • We do not require our members to hold to any particular Christian teaching, but rather we come together as the church around the idea of covenant.
Each member is asked to recite our church covenant instead of agreeing with particular doctrines. Our covenant comes from the Salem Congregationalist community shortly after arriving in the New World in 1629.

We covenant with you, O God,
    and one with another,
and do commit ourselves in your presence
to walk together in all your ways,
    according as you are pleased
    to reveal yourself to us
in your blessed Word of truth
    .

 About our Purpose...

Some years ago, First Congregational adopted a mission statement.  We believe this statement better clarifies our role in the greater Grand Ledge area.

The mission of First Congregational
United Church of Christ, Grand Ledge
is to gather people in Christ's name
and prepare them for the Christian life through worship, fellowship, service and prayer.
